Recruitment Consultant Graeme Burke was recently interviewed for an article with the Manitoba Post about onboarding tips for increasing the effectiveness of news hires.

As Graeme explains, having an effective onboarding strategy helps to smooth a hire’s transition into their new work environment, setting them up to excel in their role. In the article, he outlines 5 tips:

  1. Set expectations prior to their first day – as early as in the interview stage
  2. Be prepared so they can hit the ground running – set up IT, order business cards, have a training plan in place, etc.
  3. Involve your team in the new hire’s onboarding and mentorship
  4. Provide opportunities for the new hire to connect socially with the team outside the workplace
  5. Ensure mutual feedback is frequent, especially in the first 6 to 12 months
